Lines from a master: Snippets of The Immoralist by Andre Gide

"I am neither sad nor gay; the air here fills you with a vague exhaltation, induces a state which seems as remote from gaiety as it is from suffering; perhaps that is happiness."
...
"I had lived for myself or at least on my own terms till then; I had married without imagining my wife as anything but a comrade, without really supposing that, by our union, my life might be transformed. I had just understood at last that the monologue was ending now."
...
"I had forgotten I was alone, forgotten the time, expecting nothing. It seemed to me that until this moment I had felt so little by virtue of thinking so much that I was astonished by a discovery: sensation was becoming as powerful as thoughts."

Preaching a Slow Approach

By Elaine Zelmanov

May 5, 2003

Imagine a city with a call center for residents to express concerns about their quality of life. Now imagine it is New York. Stefano Cimicchi, mayor of Orvieto, founding member of Slow Cities movement and its current president, believes such a vision can be made a reality -- and so do 63 other mayors around the world.

Citta Slow, or the Slow City Association, is Slow Food's sister movement. What Slow Food means for the table, Slow Cities means for the town. Dedicated to the concept of considered living, a Slow City is judged by the quality of its physical and gastronomic environment. In order to be a Slow City, the community must be committed to ecological preservation, sustainable development, and among many other statutes and laws, a quality of life call center.

A Dick Danger Ale, The Last Boy Scout with Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans, sunshine, cold feet, no wood, emotional problems, too many roosters, not enough meat in my diet, too alone to notice the crowds, floor needs sweeping, dick could use a jerk, girls will be hungry again soon, I'm a crude bastard and alone is the only home for me.

planted broccoli, chard, cabbage, peas, parsley, kolrabi, mesclum, arrugala, and some other stuff I forgot already. so instead of dwelling on my problems and plants, look at this marvelous example of downtown Olympia dining instead. The greasy spoon gets the heartattack but I still eat there once a week.

20% of world's methane emissions caused by bug-farts!

No joke. Source: The Compleat Cockroach by David George Gordan

More from Andromeda Strange:

Insect flatulence may account for one-fifth of all the methane emissions on this planet. (Termites are also prodigious farters; indeed, dogs trained to sniff out termites are actually following their farts.)

Cockroaches are among the biggest contributors to global warming, since they break wind every fifteen minutes. Furthermore, they continue to release methane gas for eighteen hours after they die.

And, oddly enough, another 20 percent (or up to) of the world's methane emissions comes from flooded rice fields. From Radio Briefs.

Today's worthless knowledge brought to you by one bored papa who doesn't want to clean the house.

Dignity Village & City Repair

Attended an excellent talk today at The Evergreen State College given by Lydia Doleman of Flying Hammer Productions, a strawbale construction, natural building & carpentry company in Portland, Oregon (no website I could find, sorry). She spoke quickly and eloquently on the last day of the Synergy Conference about Portland's amazing ex-homeless group: Dignity Village and City Repair, an all-volunteer grassroots organization helping people reclaim their urban spaces to create community-oriented places.

A few things that stuck in my mind:

Making social spaces into social places.

The architecture of buildings affects our social architecture, if we build our structures sustainably and naturally, our social realm will start to reflect those changes.

One-person passive solar beautiful little houses for homeless people that cost $250 !
